Ingleborough Fell Race 2019

July 21, 2019

Well there’s a lovely pastel yellow E-Type jag on the field and one of the early Beemers, both in mint condition. But the two 544 Volvos are the cars to get my juices going. There was even an Irish tricolour on the passenger door – or are they Bowland club colours? Both tick boxes for me. When I was growing up in the sixties this was the rally car of choice along with the Saab, Citroen and Peugeot 404; so a trip down memory lane for me. Joginder Singh was The Man.

As I sit with Helena and Tom S having a cup of tea after the race, both of us in our singlets, we notice the difference in the fabrics and the quality of the lettering. The newer singlets have transfers which come off quite easily in the wash whereas my older one seems to have the lettering dyed into the fabric and remain quite bold. Something to consider when ordering the next lot Lee.

Anyway, to the race, the gloomy morning in the Yorkshire Dales gives way to a rather nice afternoon. If you’re in anything more than a singlet and shorts then you’re overdressed.

After supporting Simon Bs BG last Saturday on legs 3 and 4 last week I’m really not sure how my legs are going to perform but I’m entering anyway. I’ll run till I can’t and, guess what, I run all the way to the top. Yes, dear reader, it’s as much a surprise to me as it is to you. ‘That’s what you’re supposed to do’ says Chippy afterwards but reminds himself that he didn’t. So nary a murmer from my legs – what’s that all about? My usual poor leg speed from the top lets quite a few pass me on the way down but not enough to prevent me picking up the v60 spot. How good is that! You could have knocked me over with a feather.

The GandOs are quite well represented actually. Sam H nearly gets to Sandy for 8th and 9th spots. Then Chris B, Chip, Mark Mark, Tom and Tony L are clustered within a couple of minutes of each other. And there’s a respectable haul of silverware to place in the trophy cabinet Lee; we win the team trophy, Chip wins v50 and yours truly gets v60. What a lovely day and I just love the Yorkshire people here; organisers, helpers and visitors. They’re just good folk.

I buy Joe Simpson’s book at one of the stalls. James G tells me he’s still hale and hearty hereabouts somewhere. I hope his book is as good as the film about it; what an absorbing story. Fell running, climbing, naked leap frog; all these exciting and interesting sports that weren’t available to me when I was growing up.
